Robert L. Smith

Robert L. Smith, Jr. is a well-respected educator and leader. He currently holds the position of Executive Director of the University of Northern Iowa Center for Urban Education, with it’s location in Waterloo, Iowa. UNI_CUE is the home of many educational, cultural and talent programs under the leadership of Robert Smith.

Some of the programs include:

     • Classic Upward Bound

     • Educational Opportunity Center

     • Educational Talent Search

Mr. Robert Smith earned his Communication Studies degree at the University of Iowa along with many accolades during his tenure here in the State of Iowa.

He is the recipient of:

  •  The Juneteenth Liberty Award by Iowa Secretary of State

  •  The Sisters of Target Award- Des Moines, Iowa

  •  The Afro American Community Broadcasting, Inc. (KBBG Radio) Founders Award

  •  The Waterloo Chamber of Commerce Public Citizen of the Year Award

  •  The Paul Harris Fellowship Scholarship Award

  •  The Kappa Alpha Psi Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award

  •  The Waterloo Chamber Exchange Club Book of Golden Deeds Award

  •  The Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser by the Eastern Iowa Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals

  • Selected as one of Twenty Under 40  featured in the Waterloo Courier

Mr. Robert Smith has contributed so much time and service to the citizenry of Black Hawk County as well as the State of Iowa. He served on the Waterloo Community School District’s Board of Education as well as the Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors.

We are proud to have him as our Keynote Speaker at the Pre-conference on African American Children and Families, 2020.
